The organizing committee is delighted to present this year’s OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award to Todd Collard, teacher-coach at Napanee DSS. Todd has been a stalwart of the high school volleyball community in the Kingston area for the past 25 years – coaching both the boys and girls season every year. He has served as athletic director for his school and in the position of Transfer Chair for our local athletic association. Todd’s patient and encouraging demeanor makes him an outstanding developmental coach. Many of his athletes have gone on to play post-secondary volleyball and some have gone on to become teacher coaches themselves.
Gabriel deGroot is entering his seventh year Head Coach, Queen’s Men’s Volleyball. He led the Gaels to back-to-back OUA championships in his first two seasons in charge, and was named the OUA East Division Coach of the Year in his first season in 2018-19, before the 2020-21 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
deGroot led Queen’s to a 15-5 regular season record and OUA silver medal in 2023-24, before tying the program’s best ever finish at the national level, finishing fourth overall at the U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship, hosted on home court.
deGroot was an assistant coach with Canada at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship in 2021. He has also been assistant/statistical analyst for Team Ontario at the Canada Summer Games in 2016-17.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph and is also a trained Advanced Development Coach. At Guelph, he was an OUA All-Star and was named the OUA Libero of the Year in consecutive seasons.
