OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award celebrates the efforts of the exceptional student-athletes in Ontario who best exemplify the characteristics that OFSAA is founded on.
Nominations come to the OFSAA office detailing the exceptional character of student-athletes from across the province. This year’s recipients inspire those around them with their involvement on the playing field and in the classroom, in both school and community.

Selecting just one female and one male winner from the over 50 submissions is a difficult task, but these two individuals stood out for their commitment to OFSAA’s values of leadership, equity, respect and sportsmanship. Each winner will receive a $1,000 grant from Jostens and a commemorative plaque to recognize this outstanding achievement.

Le Prix d’esprit sportif de la FASSO récompense les efforts d’élèves athlètes exceptionnels en Ontario qui incarnent les valeurs fondamentales de la FASSO.
La FASSO reçoit des mises en candidature détaillant le caractère exceptionnel d’élèves athlètes de partout en province, qui inspirent leur entourage par leur participation aux sports scolaires et leur implication scolaire et communautaire.
Il n’est jamais facile de choisir un seul lauréat masculin et une seule lauréate féminine. Les deux personnes suivantes se sont démarquées en promouvant les valeurs de la FASSO telles le leadership, l’équité, le respect et l’esprit sportif. 2019-20 Male Recipient: Tristan Smith

Tristan is a grade 12 student at École secondaire publique Maurice-Lapointe in Kanata, Ontario.
Tristan is a devoted student, a talented, hard-working athlete and a dedicated volunteer within his community. He participated in volleyball, hockey, soccer, ultimate, badminton and track and field. In the school community, Tristan was the treasurer for the school student government and convened the school’s intramural floor hockey league. He also served as an assistant coach for the junior girls’ volleyball team at school.
Outside of school activities, Tristan enjoys volunteering as a counsellor with the Academy of Martial Arts and the Royal City Soccer Camp in Kanata. In addition, he also gives his time to the Kanata Food Cupboard Food Drive.
Outside of competing, Tristan refereed soccer for the Eastern Region Soccer League and the atomic volleyball tournaments organized by his school. For the City of Ottawa, he can be trusted as a sound swimming instructor and lifeguard.
Tristan is a proud ambassador of his school and he presents many of the core values that the school tries to instill in their students on a daily basis. With his organizational skills and relentless work ethic, the school has full confidence in Tristan. The teachers from the staff that have had the pleasure of working with this student acknowledge his compassion for colleagues, his respect for teachers and his desire to improve and gain more knowledge at every occasion.
Tristan’s integrity and leadership traits, both at school and in the community, make him an excellent recipient of the 2019-20 Character Athlete Award. Congratulations!
Tristan fréquente l’École secondaire publique Maurice-Lapointe, à Kanata, en 12e année.
Il se démarque à titre d’élève impliqué, d’athlète talentueux et de bénévole au service de sa communauté. Tristan démontre sa polyvalence en pratiquant un éventail de sports : ballon-volant, hockey, soccer, ultimate frisbee, badminton et piste et pelouse. À son école, il a occupé les fonctions de trésorier du conseil étudiant et a formé une ligue intra-muros de hockey intérieur, en plus d’être entraîneur adjoint de l’équipe de ballon-volant junior filles.
Dans la communauté, Tristan est instructeur bénévole pour l’Academy of Martial Arts ainsi que pour le camp de soccer du club Royal City. Il appuie aussi les campagnes de collecte d’aliments de la banque alimentaire de Kanata.
Tristan s’est retrouvé de l’autre côté du miroir dans le domaine sportif en agissant comme arbitre pour la Eastern Region Soccer League et les tournois de ballon-volant organisés par son école. Les citoyens d’Ottawa le verront aussi en poste comme instructeur de natation et sauveteur.
Fier ambassadeur de son école, Tristan adhère pleinement aux valeurs fondamentales qu’elle cherche à inculquer à ses élèves. Organisateur hors pair et travailleur infatigable, Tristan jouit d’une confiance amplement méritée. Les enseignants et enseignantes qui ont le plaisir de le côtoyer témoignent du respect dont il fait preuve à leur endroit, de son empathie pour ses pairs et de sa soif d’apprendre et de s’améliorer à tous les égards.
L’intégrité et le leadership de Tristan, en milieu scolaire comme dans la vie communautaire, font de lui un choix naturel pour le Prix d’esprit sportif 2019-2020. Bravo!
2019-20 Female Recipient: Grace Petsnick

Grace is a grade 12 student at Fort Frances High School.
Grace has been a recognized leader by her peers and teachers since her Grade 9 arrival to the school. It’s widely known that her drive for team success, along with the success of her teammates, was more important than her own individual accomplishments.
Grace was voted a co-captain by her teammates in her first year of high school. She has played on the basketball team, and served as captain, in each of her four years. The past two seasons, she was the unanimous choice by player vote. The tenacious defender and talented scorer owns a “pass first” mentality on the court.
Grace was the captain on the volleyball team in grade 11 and 12 and the club qualified for OFSAA in both seasons. She took part in track and field high jump, long jump – qualifying for OFSAA for both in Grade 9. A four-year captain of the track team, Grace also ran in the 100m, 400m, 4×100 relay and the 4×400 relay.
The school’s first ever Unicycle Club was spearheaded by Grace in her first year of high school. Forming the club and raising money to purchase unicycles, the club now has 30 bikes. For the past three years, Grace has been a math and english tutor within the school and privately as well. In 2018, she helped organize a town-wide water walk to raise money and awareness for African communities without access to clean water. Grace also attended the Olympia Sports Leadership Camp to become a camp counsellor.
As a Judoka, Grace has won two National titles in two years. With a limited number of girls to fight in Northwestern Ontario, she exhibited equity in a tournament in Dryden by opting to compete against boys in her division rather than against females that she regularly fought and defeated in the past. She did not capture gold that day, but showed maturity beyond her years.
This volunteer basketball and judo coach is an extremely worthy selection for this annual award. Congratulations, Grace!
Grace étudie en 12e année à la Fort Frances High School.
Dès son arrivée à l’école en 9e année, Grace s’est fait remarquer par son leadership, tant auprès de ses pairs que du personnel. En tout temps, elle fait passer ses réalisations individuelles derrière celles de son équipe et de ses coéquipières.
À sa première année au secondaire, Grace a été élue co-capitaine par les autres joueuses. Elle a été membre de l’équipe de ballon-panier et capitaine chaque année par la suite. D’ailleurs, Grace a été élue capitaine à l’unanimité au cours des deux dernières saisons. Tenace en défensive et talentueuse en zone offensive, elle préfère passer le ballon plutôt que de le garder pour elle.
Grace a été capitaine de l’équipe de ballon-volant l’an dernier et cette année. L’équipe s’est rendue au tournoi de la FASSO les deux années. Ajoutons qu’en 9e année, Grace avait participé aux épreuves provinciales de saut en hauteur et de saut en longueur de la FASSO. Capitaine de l’équipe de piste et pelouse à chacune de ses années au secondaire, Grace a aussi participé aux courses de 100 mètres et de 400 mètres, au relais 4 x 100 mètres et au relais 4 x 400 m.
En 9e année, Grace a été l’instigatrice du tout premier club de monocycle de son école en recueillant les fonds nécessaires pour son lancement. Le club compte maintenant 30 de ces vélos à une roue. Au cours des trois dernières années, elle a fait du tutorat en mathématiques et en anglais à l’école et comme emploi à temps partiel. En 2018, Grace a participé à l’organisation de la première marche municipale de collecte de fonds au profit de communautés africaines n’ayant pas accès à une source d’eau potable. Au camp de leadership sportif Olympia, la jeune athlète a suivi une formation en animation.
Également judoka, Grace s’est distinguée en remportant deux titres nationaux en autant d’années. Le nombre de filles dans sa catégorie étant plutôt limité dans le Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario, elle a préféré combattre des garçons plutôt que les filles qu’elle avait défaites régulièrement dans le passé. Grace n’a pas remporté les grands honneurs ce jour-là, mais elle a fait preuve de sa maturité hors de l’ordinaire.
Cette entraîneuse bénévole en ballon-panier et en judo constitue un choix à la hauteur de toutes les attentes. Félicitations, Grace!
